JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:              Conservation SPECIALIST
LOCATION:Napoleon, MI
DATES:             1-YEAR POSITION (anticipated starting date MAY 2012)
HOURS:             Full Time
TYPE:        FULL TIME, REGULAR

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
•            Course work in restoration, conservation, ecology, and
wildlife, or natural resource related field preferred, and two years
related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•            Certified pesticide applicator’s license or the ability to get
one.
•            Experience in ecological restoration, prescribed fire, or
invasives control.
•            Experience working with Microsoft Office suite of software
applications.
•            Experience in written and oral communication, including
public-speaking.
•            Experience organizing and coordinating projects.
•            Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
•            Ability to have a clean background check.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
             The Stewardship Network’s Raisin Cluster Partnership
Conservation Specialist, is a 1-year full-time position funded by a grant
from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and will be based at YMCA
Storer Camps in the Upper River Raisin Watershed in Napoleon, MI.  The
Conservation Specialist will work closely with Stewardship Network staff in
Ann Arbor and partners in the Raisin Cluster to coordinate and facilitate
natural areas restoration projects on lands at YMCA Storer Camp’s 1,200
acres as well as at the Iron Creek Properties, seven project sites in
Jackson and Washtenaw Counties.  Duties will include leading land
management activities including invasive species control and involvement in
prescribed burning (75%), direct landowner outreach and education (5%),
expanding partnership efforts within this region including preparing and
updating printed and web-based educational materials (10%), and
miscellaneous other duties as described in the grant agreement (10%).  The
Conservation Specialist is employed by YMCA Storer Camps, supervised by The
Stewardship Network’s Executive Director, and will work with and supervise
volunteers. The position comes with a housing option on YMCA Storer Camps.
The position will require regular travel throughout the Raisin Cluster’s
region.

•            Lead restoration activities including rare species monitoring,
invasive species control and prescribed fire.
•            Maintain records and prepare required grant reporting
documents.
•            Establish and maintain communication with conservation
partners and private landowners to inform them about conservation and
restoration progress, schedules, and opportunities.
•            Maintain a conservation communications network for landowners
and partners in The Stewardship Network’s Raisin Cluster; update printed
educational materials and educational website content.


OUTCOMES
•            At the YMCA Storer Camps site, control of glossy buckthorn and
reed canary grass on 10 to 12 acres of wetland and 1000 feet of Stony Lake
shoreline.  Additionally treatment of red maple in 3-4 acres of tamarack
swamp.
•            At the Iron Creek Properties site, control of invasive species
including glossy buckthorn, reed canary grass, honeysuckle, autumn olive,
multiflora rose on 23 acres of wetland and 48 acres of adjacent upland.
These wetlands are primarily fens adjacent along a half mile of Iron Creek.
Additionally, prioritize management objectives on 12 wetland sites totaling
approximately 35 acres.
•            Through the online Midwest Invasive Species Information
Network (MISIN) website report the number of acres of wetland habitat in
which invasive species were controlled/treated.
•            Establish photo-monitoring sites to help us track the
effectiveness of our work over time.
•            Conduct pre- and post-control inventory.
•            Track the number of acres burned through this project.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
•            Knowledge of natural systems and experience in ecological land
management principles.
•            Experience working with Microsoft Office suite of software
applications and Web-based platforms. Experience with Arc GIS a plus.
•            Excellent written and oral communication skills, including
public-speaking skills.
•            Experience organizing and coordinating projects in a team
approach.
•            Ability to clearly and tactfully present information and
listen to and address concerns.
•            Ability to manage multiple priorities and independently
complete tasks within assigned time frames.
•            Prescribed fire and invasives control experience preferred.
•            Willingness to participate in other training as needed.

COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
•            Prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions.
•            Resolve day-to-day challenges within specific guidelines and
parameters of position.
•            Complete multiple and varied assignments in a timely manner or
under deadlines.
•            Tracks progress of tasks and provide follow-up as needed.
•            Resolve routine problems independently; consult with
supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
•            Perform duties under general supervision and established
guidelines.
•            Prioritize work independently, working with supervisor as
needed.
•            Make day-to-day decisions within scope of work assignments.
•            Consult with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance,
problem or question that affects the work of others or may have impact on
the program as a whole.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
•            This position does not supervise staff on a regular basis, but
may periodically oversee and coordinate with paid field crew and other paid
restoration specialists and will coordinate volunteers.
•            Financial responsibility limited to management of grant
budget.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
•            Work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people,
including staff of various organizations, private landowners and partners,
in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner.
•            Communication and presentation skills to formulate and clearly
communicate ideas to others in small group settings or workshops.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
•            Willingness to travel within region and work flexible hours,
including weekends and evenings.
•            Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
•            Work requires physical exertion and/or muscular strain.  Work
may involve several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazards
where there is some possibility of injury.
