Steve et allus,

USAnpn.org has training videos and info on the type of data they are 
looking for, how to collect it, etc. It is geared to citizen scientists as 
well as agencies, non-profits, etc.  I strongly recommend MA-IPC, EDDMapS 
and others to check out this group's website first before making the 
decision to develop something new.  USAnpn.org thought about and worked 
out a lot of the issues being brought up in this email stream. This 
doesn't mean that there has to be a formal relationship with USAnpn.org, 
but I hate to see different systems being created across the country when 
there are existing, well thought out and operating systems that can be 
used instead. Sometimes a different system needs to be developed, but it's 
not clear as yet that this is one of those circumstances.

So I urge MA-IPC and EDDMapS to look more closely at USAnpn.org before 
deciding to develop something new. I am looking into USAnpn.org myself so 
will be glad to participate in any discussion about and further 
development of such a system (or partnership with USAnpn.org) which I too 
think is very important.

I've thought about this, but I don't have much experience with the NPN. 
Does anyone else? 
Alternatively, if there is an interest in providing (or having access to) 
more information than what the NPN (or others?) offer, a proposal to a 
funding agency might be an idea. The catch is how to get regular, 
accurate, and reliable information inputted into the system? Are there 
enough of us in the invasive plant arena or would it have to be expanded 
into a type of citizen science type project? If the latter, how do you 
maintain longevity of such a program?

Don't forget USAnpn--the USA National Phenology Network. Lots of 
organizations partnering with them including National Park Service. Check 
out their website: www.usanpn.org . 

Already a lot of good info there that EDDMapS and others could tie into, I 
would think.

I just gotta say, I *love* this thread with all the great discussion and 
super ideas that have emerged. Good to see. Sorry to have been quieter,

Very close to what I was thinking. Can something similar be done for

I also proposed it for showing reports of herbicide resistant weeds. 
According to Ian Heap (http://www.weedscience.org/usa/statemap.htm), he is 
already working on it, but I encouraged him to use EDDMapS. This would be 
a valuable tool for documenting not only the spread, but also important 
changes that are occurring in weedy and invasive plant populations. 

The 'other' Steve Young. 
Wouldn't it be great if we could get the really famous 'Steve Young' 
involved?

Prince George's County Maryland: Some Lesser Celandine had flowers a month 
earlier this year but others had flowers at the normal time.

With the unseasonably warm weather we've been having in the mid-Atlantic, 
this probably shouldn't come as a big surprise -- this weekend I found 
Garlic Mustard already in bloom at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington, 
VA. Some of us may need to modify our plans to anticipate that the plants 
are close to 4 weeks ahead of schedule and will be setting seeds fast.
