[MAIPC] question about knotweed

I have dealt new colonization by Japanese knotweed found when pulling garlic mustard. This is for a few stems, 1, 2, or a dozen. I paint the stems with aquatic-labeled glyphosate concentrate when there is no rain in forecast for 2+ days. Before it rains I cut the stalks, bag them, and send them to the county incinerator. I have done this in the spring and summer with complete success for each treated stem and no damage to native plants.

Large, old populations require other approaches, which I have not tried. It is spread by broken stems carried by streams in floods, so if you cut it, be sure to remove all of it.

Cut it in June, then go back and spray in late Aug./early Sept.

If we cut the knotweed buds now, does it have any effect on the stalk’s growth? What is the most efficient way to deal with it?

Thank you.
