[MAIPC] Glyphosate a carcinogen?

A couple of people have posted that glyphosate causes cancer. This apparently really has not been shown.

Here is a reasonable article on the subject concerning whether glyphosate may cause cancer. http://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/roundup-and-risk-assessment

It seems to me more relevant to know that in vitro studies show very low toxicity than to know that agricultural workers who spray glyphosate (and many other more toxic chemicals) can have increased cancer risk.

The review “Environmental Fate of Glyphosate” from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation mentioned by Jon Robinson is excellent, and here is the link again. http://www.cdpr.ca.gov/docs/emon/pubs/fatememo/glyphos.pdf

It is interesting to know that formaldehyde is one of the end products of microbial degradation and that glyphosate is moderately persistent in soil. High formaldehyde exposure may increase cancer risk, but it is rapidly broken down in air and water according to http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/intheworkplace/formaldehyde. But it is always good to avoid chemical exposure.

The carcinogenic properties of glyphosate went thru extensive reviews and appears to be relatively, low, especially at the low rates we apply it to control invasives. Does anyone have an updated review.

Yes,

Roundup has been found to be a carcinogen. I would hope anyone using it would take appropriate precautions.

PS - just Google "how to kill kudzu" - one way apparently is to keep removing the vegetative parts and eventually the core dies too...but you can probably spend a whole day just reading the hits that come up.

but don't forget that Roundup has now been shown to be carcinogenic.

Greg,
Here is information on Roundup. http://www.cdpr.ca.gov/docs/emon/pubs/fatememo/glyphos.pdf

I think judicious use of Roundup would have minimal impact. I use it to control poison ivy, and some other hard to control vines. I still pull my English Ivy by hand.
