[MAIPC] spotted knapweed in the east

Blue Marsh near Bernville in Berks County, PA along Rt. 183 from North Heidelberg Road south and on Blue Mountain in SGL 110/Weiser State Forest from Rt. 183 to near Port Clinton.  SGL 110 has at least one species and one hybrid species.  In a week or so I will be collecting samples of a wide range of flower color morphs from deep purple to white for Steve Grund of the Western Berks Conservancy.  If anyone else wants samples or to view the infestations, let me know.  The conditions would be described as dry, compacted and abused soil in full sun. I will also be collecting samples of Giant knotweed and possibly Bohemian knotweed at the same time in SGL 110 in mostly the same location.                                                                                                     Richard Gardner

Judy,
It has been highly invasive in the right soil conditions in the east for quite some time in my experience. When I was in college at Cornell in the late 90's I worked with Bernd Blossey and we had a number of sites in the Finger Lakes where heavy invasions followed RR rights of way on the cuts and ballast banks.  It is also invasive on roadcuts, strip mines, and other poor soil, dry areas throughout western and central pennsylvania.  I've never seen it outcompete natives in more mesic sites, but it could have heavy impacts on certain high wildlife value xeric habitats, e.g. shale barrens, reclaimed strip mine sites, talus slopes, etc. 
The biocontrol critter Blossey's lab was working with at the time was a very attractive, large curculionid, Cyphocleonus achates.

All,
I am working on adding spotted knapweed to the list of invasive plants in the Mid-Atlantic that have biocontrol insects available for release, but the vast majority of published work deals with infestations in western rangelands. The implication seems to be that it rarely becomes invasive in the east, but maybe that is changing.
Does anyone know of (1) infestations of knapweed in particular habitats in the east or (2) any states in the eastern US that have released biocontrol insects targeting this species?

I'm glad we are giving this plant more attention. It is definitely an invasive in natural areas in the eastern states. See the EDDMapS based map of its distribution nationwide from the Invasive Plant Atlas of the United States.  I saw large infestations of it along I-70 and I-68 this past weekend in Allegany and Washington Cos. in Maryland.

Attached is a pub on knapweed we did back in the 1980 - 90?s.
We haven?t worked on it since then. Still a lot of knapweed here.
