Hi everyone,

Following are the reports on the insects consuming Wavyleaf Basketgrass in Beltsville, Maryland in September. No pathogens were reported.

Here are pics of specimens preserved on 6 Sept. from Oplismenus. An Elachista, I think, but not my area. Also one parasitoid pupa. We put several leaves with larvae in alcohol and have the rest for rearing attempt…however this morning have not seen any more larvae in mines of either Op. or Panicum. Samples were collected about a week ago now and larvae may have bailed out…none seen in containers, which have loose closure. Delivering to Lep folks now…

Will need locality data for these---Thanks.

Warren

Hi Guys,

Im writing up the label for your herbarium voucher specimens. Would I be correct as follows:

Collected: 9/1/15, Beltsville Neighborhood Park, Prince Georges County MD
Collectors: Michael Ellis, Marc Imlay
Habitat: Moist forest.
Notes: Wavyleaf basketgrass leaf miner damage widespread at Beltsville Neighborhood Park this year.

If you decide to publish your results, you will have an herbarium voucher specimen to reference.

Sara

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone seen wavyleaf basketgrass getting attacked like this before? Beltsville photo album: https://goo.gl/photos/2FiwZpebPcdWFrHw6 - Notice how similar the damage is to what we are finding on our deer-tongue grasses (Last four photos).

At Little Paint Branch Park & Beltsville Neighborhood Park I estimate we are seeing this damage in at least 50% of all our wavyleaf patches. We have seen this damage for roughly 3 years but in previous years it was very isolated to just handful of plants, now it has spread across most of the park, affecting thousands of WLBG plants. Last year I came up with a theory that this damage is possibly caused by the same leaf-miner that seems so fond of our Deer-Tongue.

Although we havent seen any plants killed by this apparent leaf-miner, the plants do seem much more susceptible to stress once damaged, such as the dry conditions weve seen in Beltsville this year, possibly reducing or at least delaying seed production.

Perhaps a leaf-miner fly or leaf-miner moth already associated with Dichanthelium clandestinum?http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/grasses/tables/table130.html

Let us know your thoughts, if you have any advice for getting this insect identified, or if youve seen anything else attacking WLBG.

Also, is anyone collecting WLBG seeds this year for any studies? I can assure you we have plenty.

Thanks,

For what it's worth, I have been finding larvae in all the Beltsville deer tongue grasses. I still believe they are the likely culprit.
