[MAIPC] 'Plant Invaders' booklet reprint

I'm not against any native plant printing - these are good ideas. But I'm definitely with Steve and Andrew about trying to maintain something online for native plant nurseries. On that front it would make sense to coordinate with the different state agencies (as Andrew pointed out) as well as the active native plant societies - so we can get everyone on the same page (maybe literally).

I would suggest that anything in print should be "stable"; unlikely to change over 5 years. To this end, I would suggest that any reprints of the USFWS/NPS book include links to longstanding organizations like the Native Plant Societies and any State/Commonwealth agency that tracks Native nurseries.

This avoids getting a reprint bogged down with trying to compile a "Who's Who" and keeps the resource appendix stable over the lifespan of the printing.

OTOH, we would be "required" to list those nurseries that wish to sponsor the reprinting and help defray the cost. Presumably anyone wanting to sponsor the reprinting would have enough confidence in their business plan that they expect ot be able to benefit from the expense.

For the sponsors, they would be getting seen by an audience that does not need to be "sold to".

But that may just be the capitalist in me.

It is based primarily on information received from the vendors, and therefore is not intended as an endorsement or recommendation of any of the vendors listed. Some vendors sell non-native plants in addition to the native plants they carry. We recommend that you contact the vendors for additional information about their products.
Many vendors responded to a questionnaire sent by MNPS Nursery Committee members seeking information about whether they carry local and/or regional ecotypes (plants whose individual heritage is known to be from a specific local or a specific, somewhat broader region. Based on those responses, additional information is included with some nurseries indicating:

I agree that maintaining a list of native nurseries would be difficult and need to be frequently updated, I believe PA DCNR had tried to do something similar before. If we were looking for a list of native plants but didn’t want a full book, PA’s iConserve website has shorter lists of native plants for a variety of sites (http://www.iconservepa.org/plantsmart/nativeplants/, click on the right hand side lists- sunny/dry, shady/dry, etc). Those might be cheaper to print and provide to folks.

Howdy folks, just a thought on the native plants front... Since native plant nurseries are likely to go and come (hopefully more come, like craft breweries, than go) may I suggest that it might be better for a reprinted Native Plants book to link to a curated website of the nurseries? Hopefully the Web info could be kept current and then there wouldn't be that worry about outdated info in the print book... Also, nurseries that spring up could contribute their own info to the website, subject to approval by the curator. Cheers,

No worries, Clark. ;-)

I think that the Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping book is great, and I support the idea of a reprint, but I think an updated edition is necessary. There have likely been changes to the list of native plant nurseries, and changes in what plants are commercially available (which, I have heard, was a major factor in what species were listed).

I can speak to Kathryn Reshetiloff at the FWS-CBFO to see if there is any interest in an update. It would have to be a group effort across the region to gather the necessary data on nurseries and their species lists.
