Recent blog: Tick Season is Here

April 19, 2017

We are currently reaching the point of the year where deer tick season is the worst. This period of time usually extends until mid-July and can put quite the damper on outdoor activities. To avoid the risk of contracting Lyme disease we recommend that you lead hikes in areas with good deer control. These areas currently include:

* <https://www.howardcountymd.gov/MPEA> The 1,000 acre MPEA park in Howard County

* <https://www.nps.gov/rocr/index.htm> Rock Creek National Park in Washington D.C. adjacent to Montgomery County

* <https://www.nps.gov/cato/index.htm> Catoctin Mountain National Park in Frederick County

All of these areas have a natural deer density of 20/square mile or less. What makes this number significant is that this is the level that deer existed at before the removal of predators such as wolves and cougars. Many studies have shown that when deer are held at this level there is a dramatic reduction in the cases of Lyme disease.

If you wish to lead hikes in areas other than those listed above that do not have control of deer ticks, it is recommend that you have most hikes from mid-July through mid-April when the seasonal risk of Lyme disease is less. We would also greatly appreciate it if you could work with us and your local parks as we continue to spread awareness on the severe issue of Lyme’s disease and its connection to overpopulation of deer.

Even though in these areas the deer densities are low, it is always good to be prepared in you get a tick on you. To learn more about ticks and how to prevent Lyme disease when you are out in field, check out our <http://www.sierraclub.org/maryland/deer-ticks-and-lyme-disease> tick information page and <http://www.sierraclub.org/maryland/blog/2016/06/explore-enjoy-protect-yourself-ticks> blog post about tick prevention written by our previous stewardship intern Nick Yoder last summer.

Western MD has been buzzing with activities post-fracking ban! On Wednesday, April 5th, 35 wonderful folks met at a social event for drinks, celebration of the fracking ban, brainstorming for future activities and issues to address, and general chit chat. 3 days later, on April 8th, 13 awesome people showed up to the Hodgepodge Hike & Chat at New Germany State Park. Unfortunately, no wildflowers were blooming at the time, but we still learned about the park and we enjoyed the company of great folks taking in the scenic beauty in Western Maryland! More events are on the horizon, so like our FB page <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=6424b8931f74a6e294c89504779f01c02a4c6844858d8dd76e772c0b43ea06e5db5ceab3add47c2390380cf8c3a6645160bfd8187adbf1b3> to get updates!

Immigrants' rights partners are organizing nationwide rallies on May 1 to support immigrants and resist Trump's deportation machine. At our partners' invitation, the Sierra Club is supporting the rallies to make clear that a broad, diverse movement stands united in resisting Trump's anti-immigrant policies. The day of action is part of a coordinated weekend of resistance that includes the People's Climate March on April 29. Two days after you show up to protest Trump's attacks on our climate take a stand against Trump's attacks on immigrant families, who often disproportionately bear the brunt of climate change.
