[MAIPC] What Is It?

Correction to my earlier message.

On closer examination I think this is Persicaria virginiana, American Jumpseed. The observer described "small purplish flower on a spikey stem" fits the species, except the purplish. I did not see ocreae in the photos, but they can be deciduous or obscure. I do see pale hairs on the leaf margin consistent with Persicaria virginiana.

Thank you Milo for your helpful discussion.

Daniel

Dear Patricia and Milo,

I'm sorry your message was lost in my inbox until now.

This is not Polygonaceae. The petiole appears to form a ring around the stem like Magnoliaceae, but there is no ocreae. Could it be a young Lindera benzoin?

Kind regards,

Daniel

Hi,
We are working to figure out which invasive polygonum is in the photo below.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance,
Patricia

Hello, Claudia.

My neighbor allerted me this latest invasion of our woods. This is a small green plant that has spread rapidly, and is shallow rooted. I have tried to use my 'plant identifier' app, but got totally confused. They eventually bear a small purplish flower on a spikey stem.

Would appreciated an identification, and some advice as to how to get rid of it. I am perfectly willing to pull them all up, but would appreciate a go ahead from you.
Thanks for your help.
