Dear Forest Pest Mavens,
I hope 2018 will be a better year for the conservation of species and their habitats – although it is hard to imagine how!
Those of you in the Washington DC area have a 3-week opportunity to enjoy a fun exhibit.  An exhibit place at the National Zoo called “SPACE4” is hosting a show about INVASIVE INSECTS (!) by local artist Maggie Gourlay.  The show is titled “Adaptation / Migration in the Anthropocene”
Ms. Gourlay prepared oversized pencil drawing illustrations of 12 invasive insects – including EAB, ALB, European gypsy moth, pine shoot beetle, brown marmorated stink bug, fire ant, Mediterranean fruit fly, Formosan termite, and citrus psyllid.  Visitors can use stamps of some of the illustrations – including EAB & ALB - to make prints that they can take home.
Adding to the fun, the exhibit space is a shipping container! And Ms. Gorlay incorporated wood packaging material into the installation – reportedly as planters holding 2 invasive plant species.
The show closes on 1 January – so go soon!
The show is described in an article from the Washington Post, which is available here:

I will try to find out what inspired the show and whether it will be visible at other locations in 2018.

Again, best wishes for 2018.

Faith Campbell
