Dear Friends, The Arum Italicum seems to have caught the eye of those that are preventing the spread of non-natives into the wild. These full shade loving plants were landscaped into the eastern coastal plain areas since the 60’s prior to the last decade because of their bright orange berries after their bright white bloom. The Italicum grows to .3048 meters, has a spreading growth of one meter each year in a climate of heavy winter rains, mild temperatures and spreads through underground ‘Corms’ that cannot be seen from above. In spite of attempts to eradicate them they keep reappearing during winters with heavy rainfall and mild temperatures. I have reduced the original growth in my yard and in other yards but do not use anything except for White Vinegar on them as an herbicide because of their low proximity to the ground. I crush and cut the plant first and then apply. There is a possible impact that an herbicide might have on children and pets according to some recent scientific studies - for personal yard owners.
