One point I would like to make; just because it is a native does not mean it is or can be invasive.

Because all native plants have co-evolved with other native vegetation and fauna to form sustainable, diverse natural communities, with all components important. For the same reason that Poison Ivy, Pokeweed, etc., are all valuable.

Just curious, but what about dodder makes it a "valuable native"? We have it in our fields and I leave it alone, but wonder if it is damaging the plants on which it is growing.

Does anyone know much about the distribution of Japanese dodder? When in NJ a few years back, with a field biologist from the NYNJ Trail Conference, she indicated the Cuscuta we were seeing in a wetland area was invasive. I don't see this very often but I did just spot it in Harriman State Park in NY this past week. Wishing I had taken a closer look.

Agreed, they're very, very difficult to identify to species (you need fruits and flowers and a very fine ruler!)

It?s Cuscuta - a valuable native species. Probably C. campestre.

I don't think Japanese dodder has been reported further north than South Carolina on the east coast so far (see https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cabi.org%2Fisc%2Fdatasheet%2F17116&data=02%7C01%7Crod.simmons%40alexandriava.gov%7Cbf5dc47a84b140513d9708d5f6669159%7Cfeaa9b3143754aeeadccc76ad32a890b%7C0%7C0%7C636685842753199796&sdata=J57fGhVLJXP%2Bfv3BUM79kpakWi7yNOmSkPSGxb7s3Hs%3D&reserved=0). If you look at photos of it in CA, it covers entire shrubs and trees unlike the native dodders. Otherwise it is hard to tell it apart from the native dodders as it sometimes doesn't flower and can only be distinguished using DNA analysis.
