Hello, tree pest mavens!

Spring approaches - the deciduous magnolias on the Smithsonian Castle grounds were glorious the other day! This weather is cool enough to keep them brilliant but not so cold as to frost them into brown goo.

I have posted 2 new blogs at www.cisp.us or www.nivemnic.us  - 1st reports on the worrisome continuing presence of the EU1 strain of the sudden oak death pathogen in Oregon forests
2nd reports briefly on efforts by Californians to get control of Phytophthoras (other than P. ramorum) in native plant nurseries.  I ask whether officials and conservationists in other states are taking similar actions  - since we know Phytophthoras and other damaging pathogens are present in nurseries outside California.

I have updated the Farm Bill / tree breeding blog (posted January 29th) to summarize my presentation at the webinar hosted by the National Academy of Sciences earlier this week. The webinar and my powerpoint should be available at http://nas-sites.org/dels/studies/forest-biotech

In November, the Continental Dialogue on Non-Native Forest Insects and Diseases and the Arbor Day Partners in Community Forestry meetings will take place in Irvine, California.  I attach the "save the date" for the former. We are working together to plan good coverage of the most damaging tree-killing pests in the region -- goldspotted oak borer and invasive shot hole borers.  There will be both presentations to the two meetings and  a field trip to view the damage in person.  Plan to be there!
