Tom Crone and ~15 volunteers spent 4 hours this past Saturday digging out widely scattered barberry from Greenbelt National Park. Most were less than 18" and along the Perimeter Trail, near Greenbelt Road, and the Sweetgum Picnic Area. He said it's not a big problem, but they don't want it to become one, either.

Introduced 1900; people are going for it more now in the never-ending search for easy, evergreen plantings. First time I saw it (about 8 years ago), it wasn’t on any of my lists of invasives, & I identified it using Dirr’s Manual of Woody Landscape Plants.

Likely an escape from nearby landscaping transported by a bird. Unfortunately, it a few weeks ago I spotted it being sold by a local nursery here in Charlottesville. It would be a great conversation to have with that nursery, but I want to be armed with information first.
