This is what an oasis looks like.

Hello Marc,

They're back! We're delighted to see our partners at Rock Creek Park return to work following the shutdown. It means that our beloved national park is being managed proactively and we can focus on ways to make Rock Creek an even greater resource for us all.

This year, the Conservancy is centering its restoration efforts on five 'mini-oases' that are located in different parts of the park and see a lot of foot traffic from the communities that live around them. Since 2005, we have collectively freed more than 13,000 trees of English ivy to make them stronger, removed more than 360,000 pounds of trash to clean the watershed, and enjoyed countless hours of fun, relaxation, and rejuvenation in the abundant green space that we have at our fingertips.

Our mini-oases will concentrate the work of staff, volunteers, and our Rock Creek Conservation Corps students in about 15 acres of parkland and showcase just how fabulous Rock Creek can be. We'll also continue to work outside of park boundaries, all the way to headwaters in Laytonsville, MD, to ensure that we're taking preventive measures to care for the park from the outside in.

I look forward to seeing you in the park,

Jeanne Braha

P.S. We have a lot of volunteer events coming up! Find one near you and help us restore Rock Creek!

Introducing the mini-oases:

Rock Creek and its parks have always been a source of beautiful green space within our busy city. In 2019, Rock Creek Conservancy wants to show you how, through simple actions, we can work together to preserve Rock Creek’s beauty and keep our watershed as healthy as it can be!

What does the restoration of an oasis look like?

Volunteers prepare to collect trash in the neighborhoods near Carter Barron Amphitheatre.

Thanks to Our MLK Day Volunteers!
Despite the government shutdown and freezing cold temperatures, Rock Creek Conservancy and our volunteers could not be stopped! With 244 volunteers we collected 90 bags of trash and 71 bags of recycling.

Plant this, not that!

February is the perfect time to start planning your spring garden, and this year we encourage our supporters to plant native plants that naturally grow in the Rock Creek watershed.

In this blog, you'll find a list of native alternatives to a few common non-native invasive plant species that you can purchase at local nurseries!
