Hello, forest pest mavens.

I have posted a new blog at www.cisp.us or www.nivemnic.us . The blog summarizes the spread of the spotted lanternfly and asks whether a much more aggressive containment/eradication effort at the beginning might have been more successful in preventing this.

Two other notes:

1) it is again time to ask your member of Congress and Senators to fund APHIS and USFS efforts to eradicate, contain, or manage non-native forest pests. The House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee has set a deadline of 15 March for receiving written testimony concerning USFS programs. The Senate Interior Appropriations Subcommittee and House and Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittees (APHIS) have not yet set deadlines, but probably will soon.  I hope to blog about my recommendations for these agencies’ funding in coming weeks.

2) the IUCN has released a report assessing the level of risk to forests in the Americas (North, Central, South, and Caribbean) from various threats. They found that 80% of the forest types and 85% of the current forest area is potentially threatened. None of the criteria used in the assessment addresses invasive species. The report is available at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/conl.12623

Faith
