[MAIPC] Hypericum. A shrub

Hypericum prolificum is one of the shrubby Hypericums native to central Virginia, and probably the most likely one to be cultivated, as it is a nice full shrub with showy flowers and does not require wetland soils. It is an edge species in my experience, but I have not seen it behave aggressively. If you go to http://out.accessify.com/visit?domain=vaplantatlas.org and enter Hypericum prolificum in the search window, you will find the Virginia Plant Atlas page for the species. You gotta love showy stamens!

The specific epithet for Hypericum prolificum refers to the fact that it has many stamens, not any propensity to spread or reproduce abundantly (which it doesn’t).

Richard, I’ve heard from a subscriber to the listserv that there is a native, H. prolificum. She noted that the species name suggests it could be, well….prolific. I didn’t see anything about that when I looked up the material on it in Flora of Virginia.

Best,

Ruth

Do you know if it's a native hypericum or not?

Hi. I got a question from someone who was given a shrub Hypericum and wanted to know if it was invasive and/or poisonous. She doesn’t know the species. I think she lives in Central VA.
Thanks for any information.
Best,
Ruth Douglas
