This is a great, albeit very depressing, article in the Atlantic.

Perhaps research into biological control for earthworms needs to be made a
high priority? We might want to start checking for earthworms on our
bio-survey jaunts to record the occurrence of these exotic species and take
more care when moving from site to site to avoid spreading them to
uninfested areas. Sigh....
