[MAIPC] MAIPC Digest, Vol 99, Issue 1

The introduction of anynon-native is cause for concern. There are native Simaroubaceae in theneotropics and across the American south extending into South America whichcould face extinction if Agrilussmaragdifrons Ganglbauer isnot controlled.

The whole concept of"specialist" is always of concern because it refers to one organismat a specific point in space and time. What may appear to be a specialistorganism under certain conditions might be a generalist forced into a specificniche until a change in environmental conditions. In this case, what appears tobe a specialist to Ailanthus in Asia, may be a generalist tothe Simaroubaceae family when introduced to the rest ofthe family.

As in all aspects ofecology, we need to realize that we are scientists, not arrogant tinkerers. Myexperience with Castanea dentata shows me that our almostoverwhelming drive to "solve" the apparent problems of our worldalmost always cause more issues and very often cause disasters. We need to take the timeto realize we are a part of the ecology, not the masters of it. A system 4.5billion years old is much more complicated than any of us ephemeral organismswith minute life spans can ever comprehend.

I will do what I canthis summer with this insect since I am not far from the origin of itsintroduction and probably on the leading edge of its spread. (It would be niceif I was not at the leading edge of another invasive insect issue, but that isthe life of an ecologist with lots of time to research.) Referencematerial in PDF is welcome.
