[MAIPC] MAIPC Digest, Vol 103, Issue 11

I rescued a heavily infested 18 inch DBH hemlock in my yard by treating it with Core-Tect marbles inserted in the soil (three per inch of DBH).  It was clearly dying and 3 years later is now the picture of health.  I will have to treat it again in a year or two.

Toni, there is no reason to think HWA has disappeared. It is probably lower in numbers since there are fewer hemlocks around - but why provide bait?

Hi Everyone:
Recently a landscape designer told me that she has been using hemlocks for awhile now without problems.? This makes me wonder if the woolly adelgid is less of a threat these days?? I have reluctantly avoided installing hemlocks, but would love to, if they had a chance of success.? Any updates on the status of this problem?
Thanks for your help.

Hemlock woolly adelgids are doing well in southwest Virginia with no long
term declines noticed. They go through cycles of ups and downs depending on
winter mortality and exsessive wet or dry periods. Unfortunately they are
not going away.

HWA is treatable with systemic insecticides and if you use the right
chemical like dinotefuran, can get several years of protection. Hemlocks
also get the elongated hemlock scale  which can be just as troublesome.  I
say you can plant hemlocks but be prepared to treat them regularly.
