[MAIPC] emerging biological controls

The same approach may work for Beefsteak plant as it did for Multiflora rose
when it reached the Midwest and a native biological control that is somewhat
effective appeared. The same for Ailanthus when it got far enough south.

Well gang,

As a next step we can go the edge Japanese Stiltgrass habitats in Ohio,
Illinois Missouri, New Hampshire, Vermont etc. and survey for a dead or
dying population. Vanessa has had her students do this for wavyleaf basket
grass. So who shall do this?

Microstegium first reported in Tennessee. But there were probably multiple
points of "origin" because its use as packing material.

I understand that Japanese Stiltgrass started in Ohio as packing material a
long time ago. Soi what is controlling it there?

I haven’t done any research on this, but I noted the other week that EddMaps
has some of the southernmost areas (northern Florida, southern Georgia, etc)
listed under a retraction of range due to climate change. So I’d guess that
in the south it is getting too warm for this species?

Elsewhere, it may be too cold, although I also suspect that it is just a
matter of time until it spreads to some of these areas. Also, tracking
issues- the map below doesn’t show stiltgrass in much of NW PA, and I know
some of those counties have at least a few healthy infestations

Thank you Marc Imlay for removing 4 hours all the small isolated patches and
specimens of Japanese Stiltgrass where we have removed in before. Including
late emergents. Thank you so much Marc Simon for finishing the remaining
large patch last Saturday! I checked and the seeds have not started to form
yet; so we can survey for anymore stilgrass in other areas of the park that
we may have missed next Saturday. As I removed the stiltgrass I came across
a few juvenile garlic mustard plants, mock strawberry plants and Oriental
bittersweet plants all of which I removed. Since the soil was wet. I also
was able to pull out about one third of the English Ivy plants I came across
as I removed the stiltgrass,

Thank you Marc Imlay, Doug and Karen Hogan and Steve and Jenny Prince for
removing a Japanese barberry, juvenile garlic mustard, oriental bittersweet
juveniles a huge wineberry, and a huge patch of Japanese Stiltgrass. 3 of
the 4 major patches of JSG are now done. I also removed about 1/4th of the
4th major patch. Vera plans to show us over a dozen species of mushrooms in
Guilford Woods in the near future.

Thank you Marc and Marc for removing Japanese Stilt grass for 2 and ½ hours.
Jack and I also removed 13 bush honeysuckles and three Japanese barberry to
prevent Lyme disease from deer ticks. And 2 isolated wineberry and a patch

no more bush honeysuckle in the park. The final patch of 8 was the size that
causes 10x increase in risk of Lyme disease. Lily recruited two excellent
supporters she met. Take a look at

Guilford woods clean up June 26 2021

Thank you Sally and myself for removing about 2/3 of the largest patch of
Japanese Stilt grass. I also removed 2 bush honeysuckle and one Japanese
barberry to prevent Lyme disease from deer ticks. And 2 isolated wineberry.
