For what it is worth, my experience is that Japanese knotweed is found in wet areas such as along the Schuylkill River in northern Berks/southern Schuylkill counites. Giant knotweed is generally found in wooded areas such as near Phillips Canyon on the Appalachian Trail. Bohemian knotweed is usually found in fields and other open areas with dry soil and little shade. If my memory is right Bohemian knotweed was developed for bovine food - I may be wrong on this, so it is worth checking on.

Here are two research abstracts from Botany 2021 Conference on Japanese Knotweed hybrids (some of the researchers have PA ties and will probably be familiar to some of us).

Hi all,    I was just talking to some researchers, and the topic of differentiating invasive knotweeds and bush honeysuckles came up. I know I’m often guilty of just putting “Lonicera spp” or “Fallopia spp” when entering data points or taking notes. However, some researchers are working to find differences between these species’ infestation habits or treatments options, and accurate/species-specific data helps them. This is especially for knotweeds (Japanese, hybrid, and giant), where future biocontrols may be targeted at the individual species rather than the genus.
So I promised the researchers that I’d put this reminder out to MAIPC, as well as other groups I work with.    Thanks all, and enjoy the rest of your summer!    Andrew Rohrbaugh | Botanist Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources
