I used horticultural vinegar, 30% acidity, on Japanese stilt grass this past spring to clear a path on a remote trail so we could walk safely. I applied it with a backpack sprayer to a 2 foot wide strip of JSG to keep us from injury due to the rockiness of the trail. It did the job we needed.
In 2020 I used a weed whip with only minimal success. The trail is rocky as is typical near where we live. In part due to the pandemic we needed someplace a little more remote which means less travelled than most trails to feel safe due to the lack of coherent information at that time. The Appalachian Trail near us in 2020 was a highway due to the Shutdown. I heard rumors of severely increased foot traffic on other local trails. I was proactive this year making the trail much safer. Even vaccinated with Moderna (me) and Pfizer (Heather), we are still be very careful using less active (and hunted) routes whenever possible.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on this, including, of course, impacts on the soil.
