An eriophyid mite species, Aculus mosoniensis, was found in different
European countries always associated with the tree-of-heaven. This mite
induces downward rolling of leaves with reddening (see arrow in the photo
below). Once infested, the plant growth is reduced.
In 2020, an open field test was initiated at the Biotechnology and
Biological Control Agency facilities, exposing tree-of-heaven and 14
nontarget plants species to the biocontrol candidate agent. Results showed a
narrow host specificity of the mite, recorded only from the target weed
species.
Reddening appears on the tree-of-heaven. (Photo courtesy of the European
Biological Control Laboratory)

Overseas Biological Control Laboratories newsletter. It has now been
reformatted to be easier to read, less technical, and more in-tune to our
stakeholders' needs. In this edition, topics range from overviews of the
outstanding work being accomplished at each of the four overseas
laboratories to summaries of specific research endeavors. These include
specifics on attempts to develop environmental sound management strategies
for the control of invasive insect species including the roseau cane scale,
little fire ant, Bagrada bug, and cattle fever ticks as well as invasive
plants including water hyacinth, hydrilla, Medusahead, and tree-of-heaven.
We trust you will find this new format more to your liking and we await your
comments and suggestions for improvement.

The Ongoing Search for New Biological Control Agents of Hydrilla
Hydrilla verticillata, or hydrilla, is a submersed aquatic plant native to
Asia, Australia, Europe, and Africa. It is one of the worlds worst weeds.
Australian Biological Control Laboratory researchers are currently
collaborating with international researchers to find new biological control
agents for the invasive weed.

Biocontrol Agents for French Broom, Medusahead and Tree-of-Heaven
A total of seven targets belonging to annual grasses (Medusahead and
Ventenata), forbs and shrubs (Sahara mustard, stinkwort and French broom),
and rangeland and forest weeds (Tree-of-Heaven, Swallow-worts) have been
identified in the European Biological Control Laboratory (EBCL)'s five-year
research plan (2020-2025).

Natural Enemies for Little Fire Ants
One of Foundation for the Study of Invasive Species main projects, the
little fire ant, is an invasive ant native to South America. The little fire
ant has become a major agricultural problem in Hawaii, and a spreading
invader in the continental U.S.

New Biocontrol Agents for Water Hyacinth
The water hyacinth planthopper, Megamelus scutellaris, an important
biocontrol agent of water hyacinth, has endosymbionts to make up for
deficiencies in the plant hoppers diet, meaning they can have a strong
impact on the establishment of the planthopper.
