Blue Ridge PRISM was also contacted about this species.

Based on the flower this looks like Mazus miquelii which is a perennial. It is quite a cute little plant with a lovely flower, but invasive. Yikes.

My initial thoughts on control that I conveyed to the concerned landowner:

I could not readily find any specific control recommendations. Assuming it was restricted to the lawn, treating it as a lawn seems like a good option and a lawn-care company would be helpful in this instance. Also, contacting a local extension service for assistance. Controlling weeds in lawns is not my area of expertise and I am not super familiar with the chemical control options on the market that would be most effective. The local extension service may be a good option or at least able to connect to a turfgrass specialist.

At a minimum, weed whack the plant to remove the flowers and interrupt reproduction for this year (?). Or if you do not care about the grass, use a glyphosate product to control the plants. Triclopyr amine should not impact the grass, but control the Mazus.

Does anyone have any additional experience or other recommendations for this plant?

Subject: [MAIPC] FW: Invasive?

Hi,

I'm not familiar with Mazus miquelii or Mazus pumilus - a perennial, creeping groundcover native to Japan and China. It is considered an invasive in the northeast according to Wikipedia. I'm finding much information about it being invasive on the web and wanted to ask the MAIPC what experience you've had with this plant? EddMaps only has Mazus pumilus listed in the New York and New Jersey area. iNaturalist had a few points and one listed here in Reston, VA.

USDA has it listed in more states.

USDA Plants Database<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fplants.usda.gov%2Fhome%2FplantProfile%3Fsymbol%3DMAMI4&data=05%7C01%7CPatricia.Greenberg%40fairfaxcounty.gov%7Ce72e794150f94ff5fd5308da2ed83ce8%7Ca26156cb5d6f41729d7d934eb0a7b275%7C0%7C0%7C637873803536785503%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=nYcwNzjPDG5Llb2Cp%2F%2B%2B8j4%2BVcoxjLyEN6Fulgh2CD4%3D&reserved=0>

Would you consider it an EDRR species?

See photos below.

Hi ladies
Is this invasive?
We have patches in our yard. Remove by pulling?
