[MAIPC] Copper nails

Good morning.

I just read a FB post (on the NC native plant page) about the use of copper
nails to kill trees.  I did a quick Google search and read that this method
is more effective on small trees than larger ones.  In any case, because
this is the first time I had heard of this approach, I am wondering about
the pros and cons.  I figured there must be significant downsides if no one
in the invasive plant community (who I know, in any case) suggests it.

I understand that it can take a long time to work, but is this something
that individual homeowners can do without affecting the soil?
