<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Project: </b><u>Developing an adaptive management framework
for <i>Phragmites australis</i></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Location:</b> U.S. Geological Survey, Great Lake Science
Center, Ann Arbor, MI.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Salary:</b> $20.39/hr.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Duration of
position:</b> This is a one-year full-time Student Services
Contractor position. <span style="color:black">The successful candidate will be
hired as an independent contractor. This is not a federal position, and time
does not count toward time-in-service. This position does not include health care
benefits or paid leave. </span>To qualify, the applicant must either be a <u>current
student</u> or <u>have graduated within the previous 12 months</u>. All other
applicants are ineligible. The anticipated start date is July 2015. The
intended duration is one year, with possible 1 year extension, dependent on Student
Services eligibility and funding.</p>
<p align="left"><b>Position Description:</b> The
student contractor will serve as assistant to a Post-Doctoral researcher
spearheading a new invasive <i>Phragmites</i> adaptive management initiative and will be based at the Great Lakes
Science Center (GLSC) in Ann Arbor, MI. Duties may include, but are not limited
to, the following: 1) Land manager outreach – introducing the new adaptive
management initiative to state, private, and federal land managers,
communicating accomplishments, and receiving feedback on the structured
decision making model; 2) Engaging with partner organizations – working with
the Great Lakes Commission, the Great Lakes <i>Phragmites</i>
Collaborative, and others to support open communication among project partners
and stakeholders; 3) Technical assistance – writing annual reports for funding
agencies, preparing presentations for the management community, supporting
model development, data management.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Education/Experience Requirements:</b> <span style="color:black">The successful candidate must be currently enrolled as a
student or must have received a degree within one year prior to beginning the
contract. </span><span style="color:black">A Master's degree in ecology, biology, natural resources, conservation
biology or other appropriate discipline is preferred, but students with a
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline AND at least one year of graduate
school will be considered. Experience (especially in the Great Lakes region) studying
or developing adaptive management strategies, controlling invasive species,
working with land managers, or community outreach is desired. Strong verbal and written skills are
important. The student contractor should have a keen sense for attention to
detail and a strong desire to learn. S/he also should be highly motivated and
comfortable working both as a member of a close team and independently.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Other Details: </b> <span style="color:black">This position is an excellent opportunity for a candidate
to participate in outreach activities, learn principles of structured decision
making, and expand their experiences with adaptive management in the Great
Lakes. In addition to interacting with individuals from federal, state, local,
and non-governmental agencies active in the Great Lakes basin, the candidate
will have the opportunity to conduct field work (e.g. ground-truthing model
outputs, site visits). </span></p>
