<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Knotweed has been in WV since at least 1918 (Morgan Co.) and in </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">southern part of the state from </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">1920's. It has </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">spread
N & W so that there are now records from 32 counties.</span><br>

<span style="color:#1F497D">The PA Bureau of Forestry has found that spotted knapweed is invasive in our state. Luckily, it doesn’t compete as well in forested or mesic sites. However, on more xeric sites (rocky roadsides, ROW’s, barrens, cliffs) it can certainly
be more aggressive and take space and resources away from native plants that might use those habitats. Additionally, we’ve monitored it increasing on many of the Marcellus pads and ROW’s, and it has been a management concern on some areas we are maintaining
as grassland for rare bird species.</span></p>

It was invasive in prairie restorations in Ann Arbor, MI. The U of M landscape architect dept. could be contacted, or the city's Natural Areas Preservation director in the parks dept., for more up to date info. </p>

I found something called Tyrol's knapweed (Centaurea nigrescens) spreading in a small area along the towpath in Princeton, NJ. And am seeing Daucus carota in some spots in NJ start to act as invasive in meadows as it was in Michigan. </p>

It's all over WV on roadsides, dry slopes, and pastures. We are actively treating it within the boundaries of the Potomac Highlands CWPMA, but as far as I know only with herbicides thus far.<br>

I am working on adding spotted knapweed to the list of invasive plants in the Mid-Atlantic that have biocontrol insects available for release, but the vast majority of published work deals with infestations in western rangelands. The implication seems to be
that it rarely becomes invasive in the east, but maybe that is changing.<br>
Does anyone know of (1) infestations of knapweed in particular habitats in the east or (2) any states in the eastern US that have released biocontrol insects targeting this species?<br>

I'm glad we are giving this plant more attention. It is definitely an invasive in natural areas in the eastern states. See the EDDMapS based map of its distribution nationwide from the Invasive Plant Atlas of the United States. I saw large infestations of
it along I-70 and I-68 this past weekend in Allegany and Washington Cos. in Maryland.<br>
