Recently, I have noticed <i>Anthraxon hispidus</i> at some of our sites and I was wondering if anyone had treatment ideas for this species or methods to avoid <i>Anthraxon hispidus</i> pioneering at a newly created wetland site. I have asked MDE what they would suggest and they have stated that because <i>Anthraxon hispidus</i> is a relatively new invasive species, treatment methods are not well known. MDE is not sure how it spreads but knows it spreads easily and generally grows mixed in with other desirable wetland species so it is hard to treat without killing everything else. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>MDE has suggested a few things that could be incorporated to reduce the likelihood of this species taking over the sites: <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoListParagraph style='text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo2'><![if !supportLists]><span style='font-family:Symbol'><span style='mso-list:Ignore'>·<span style='font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"'> </span></span></span><![endif]>Reduce contamination from other sites (in a floodplain setting where it is already present upstream, this may be useless).<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoListParagraph style='text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo2'><![if !supportLists]><span style='font-family:Symbol'><span style='mso-list:Ignore'>·<span style='font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"'> </span></span></span><![endif]>Apparently a wetland banker from VA uses a pre-emergence herbicide to slow the development of stilt grass (which would be another species that may be worse in the stream floodplain setting). We have not tried this method, so we don’t know how successful it would be.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoListParagraph style='text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo2'><![if !supportLists]><span style='font-family:Symbol'><span style='mso-list:Ignore'>·<span style='font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"'> </span></span></span><![endif]>Other groups seed heavily with herbaceous species to get vegetative cover quickly on the site, to reduce colonization by undesirable species.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoListParagraph style='text-indent:-.25in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo2'><![if !supportLists]><span style='font-family:Symbol'><span style='mso-list:Ignore'>·<span style='font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"'> </span></span></span><![endif]>Getting a dense tree canopy cover in as quickly as possible can help shade out some of the shade intolerant herbaceous species (this wouldn’t help with stilt grass, but does help with reed canary grass). <i>Anthraxon hispidus</i> is likely another shade tolerant plant, so this might not help as much for this species, but it will at least add more diversity than if the grass was the only species.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Because it is a fairly new species, MDE hasn’t had time to look into what research is available yet. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>If you have any suggestions or have heard of any solutions, please share and let me know!!<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal>Thanks,<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Sarah T. "<br><br><br><br>is not in alignment with my experience.<br><br><br><br>It will grow directly in standing water, both fully or partially submersed, as well as in wet meadows and along waterways. It forms vast monocultures that choke everything else out, and becomes <br><br>literally impossible to manage. It thrives in disturbance. We have a <br><br>wet meadow area that we are attempting to restore in Salt Lake County where this species simply grows over the top of almost everything else.<br><br><br><br>I would most certainly consider it to be a very problematic weed, as well as invasive, at least in our area.<br><br><br><br>And so is Polypogon monspeliensis, and it is also very difficult to <br><br>remove/control as well.
