I?m currently working on a project at Cacapon state park in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. The project involves cutting orientalist bittersweet vines that are growing up trees and applying garlon 4 (triclopyr) mixed with diesel to the surface of the cut vine encircling the vine and to the ground.

We worked on the project last weekend and plan another work trip mid November.

The area where we are working also has numerous areas of ?undergrowth? of vines. I was told best to use foliar spray in late summer and then cut vines. However in summer lots of other underbrush and ticks and snakes.

Instead can these shorter vines be killed and controlled in November?
If these vines are cut close to the ground if herbicide garlon 4 is applied will it kill the vines? How close to the ground do these undergrowth vines need to be cut. How should spray be applied surface or all the way down to the ground?

Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I have found that the very small vines can be pulled out by the roots with volunteers successfully. This solves about half of the undergrowth problem. Make sure the soil is wet from recent rain, Marc Imlay
First thing I noticed is that your using diesel fuel with the Garlon 4 Ultra. May a suggest a more environmentally refined basal oil to go with the Garlon 4 Ultra(25%). We carry Arborchem Basal Oil (75%), just about all veg. management herbicide distributors have a basal oil commercially available. Treatment of larger stems, I would cut and leave a stub (6 inch or so) and treat the surface and the remaining bark on the stub. For small vines, it wouldn't be necessary to remove them, you could treat the vines up from ground line to 12" up the vine, less for really small vines. If you want to see how to do proper basal and cut stump applications, please view my video below. Caution should be used not to get the spray on to the bark of desirable trees.
For smaller vines you might want to try a Pullerbear or even a long claw shaped pry bar.?Pullerbear Tree, Root, Sapling Puller
I have found that pulling by hand is tough for all but the smallest vines. I am not sure if the remaining rootlets clone as we have had Oriental Bittersweet vines I cut off regenerate from the roots. We are maintaining an organic yard, so most pesticides are not an option. We have about 1/2 acre of wood lot which is a nice laboratory for a lot of the ecology I do. If is local and invasive, we probably have it, except for Perilla frutescens.
