For what it's worth, I have found that stiltgrass can still live underneath the Perilla. I pulled up a large patch of Perilla yesterday, and found a whole bunch of stiltgrass hiding underneath it. That particular bunch of stiltgrass until then had avoided my notice, weeding hands, and Rodeo-filled spray bottle. So this could be seen as a cooperative arrangement between the two, rather than a competitive one. Non-scientifically speaking, of course.

--Susan Gitlin

On Mon, Aug 31, 2020 at 12:04 PM <maipc-request@lists.maipc.org> wrote:

Send MAIPC mailing list submissions to
Microstegium versus Perilla

I came across a huge mono-culture of Japanese stiltgrass about 25% of an
acre. In the middle of the patch was a monoculture patch of Beefsteak mint
about 15 feet x 20 feet with almost no stiltgrass. There were two other
beefsteak patches about 5 x 10 feet with no Microstegium. Is this just one
non-native invasive outcompeting another one? Or is there another
possibility that could be explored? For example, reintroduce Mentha arvenis.
Any potential biocontrol?
I would dig up the roots first. Beef steak plant has a different root structure.?And it is poisonous to cattle, so no, I would not purposefully introduce it.. you never know who will misunderstand that recommendation. The landscape use of a site changes over time and ownership.?
Stilt grass is not poisonous.?
