Does anyone know if someone has looked at tree growth after removal of a heavy infestation of invasive vines? I am especially interested in canopy trees that are either mature or almost mature in size, but have had a heavy infestation of vines which may have slowed development or caused a decline in health. Do we know if the tree rebounds and is there an increase in growth during the rebound time period?

Thank you
Interesting question Heidi. If someone is currently doing research hopefully they'll respond to the list. I did a quick search on Google Scholar for tree growth and vine removal, but you may need to search for specific vines and trees.
One study that looked at oriental bittersweet and tulip trees that found no effect on growth ( https://bioone.org/journals/the-american-midland-naturalist/volume-172/issue-1/0003-0031-172.1.25/Using-Dendroecology-to-Examine-the-Effect-of-Oriental-Bittersweet-Celastrus/10.1674/0003-0031-172.1.25.full).
Dennis Whigham did a series of studies measuring sweet gum growth following above vs. below ground control (root competition) of Japanese honeysuckle and Virginia creeper early in his career that found that below ground competition was more important than above ground, https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/4220218.pdf?casa_token=3ixmAuKzDw4AAAAA:BVCi1evheB5a4LOZauh52kI6qqrg3FJpZen1dl1zSYrgNwffChtCYnot2oZwSxCDIWo2pwR0uwAXXDIyNbUrC71U6yLjN6TH1ZC8vYJpeH_owOCntGM
