The email I'm forwarding to you all is announcing the launch of a new
webinar series by the Ecological Landscaping Association (ELA). It looks
quite interesting, which is why I'm putting yet another email into your
boxes. My apologies for cross-postings or damage to overstuffed boxes (and
their owners).

This part of the introduction especially piqued my interest:

*Topics covered include a deeper look into soils, native and invasive
plants, water management, designing a sustainable landscape, sustainable
maintenance, organic lawn care, the "good business" of sustainable
landscaping, and sustainability as a healthy landscape option.*

*Sylvan Kaufman* will give the first presentation on *Sept. 17th* (note
time: 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDT). Many of you may already know Sylvan. If
not personally, you may know her through the book she co-authored: "*Invasive
Plants, Guide to Identification and the Impacts and Control of Common North
American Species*" (2007).

OK, have at it, folks!

ELA is launching a* free webinar series* on sustainable landscaping for
professionals beginning on *September 17th*.
The interactive webinars will be taught by experts from across the country
who are known for their expertise in specific areas of
sustainability.Topics covered include a deeper look into soils, native
and invasive
plants, water management, designing a sustainable landscape, sustainable
maintenance, organic lawn care, the "good business" of sustainable
landscaping, and sustainability as a healthy landscape option.

The series is presented by the Ecological Landscaping Association (ELA), in
collaboration with the Midwest Ecological Landscape Alliance (MELA), the
Chesapeake Conservation Landscape Council (CCLC), and EcoLandscape
California (ELC).

"After several years in the idea stage, and thanks to former ELA President
Risa Edelstein, this collaboration is finally coming to fruition," said ELA
Executive Director, Penny Lewis. "With ELA members located all across the
country, we are excited to be offering high quality ecological education
that is no longer location-dependent. We are very fortunate to have the
participation of three exceptional organizations in MELA, CCLC, and ELC. By
collaborating with regionally-based partners, the webinar content will
address topics of interest to our wide ELA audience."

*Ecology Basics for Landscapers and Designers*
*Presented by Sylvan Kaufman*

Learn the basic principles of ecology and how they apply to gardening and
landscaping. This webinar provides a framework for thinking about a garden
as an ecological system. You create a living system with its own plant and
animal communities, population dynamics and food webs. Energy, nutrients
and water flow into and through a garden influenced by the surrounding
landscape. Understanding ecological principles can help you create an
environmentally friendly and beautiful landscape.

*Sylvan Kaufman* consults, writes and teaches on ecology, botany and
restoration topics through her business, Sylvan Green Earth Consulting,
located in Denton, MD and Santa Fe, NM. She has a B.A. in Biology from
Vassar College and a Ph. D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from
Rutgers University. Sylvan co-authored "Invasive Plants, Guide to
Identification and the Impacts and Control of Common North American
Species" first published by Stackpole Books in 2007. She teaches as an
adjunct professor for George Washington University's Sustainable Landscapes
Program, serves on the board of the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping
Council, and participates on the Maryland Invasive Species Council and
Maryland Invasive Plant Advisory Committee. She has worked as a researcher
on invasive plant and climate change projects at Harvard University and as
the curator and land manager at Adkins Arboretum.
