Garlic Mustard vs Mycorrhiza
Martine and Hale of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA recently published a paper introducing evidence toward the negative effects of the invasive plant garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) on native mycorrhizal associations. The disruption occurs because garlic mustard produces anti-fungal compounds which not only hampers formation of new associations between native plants and mycorrhizae, but also diminishes the effectiveness of existing connections.

Citizen Science Opportunities
This year Wild Ones Wild for Monarch Program will be encouraging you to take up some citizen science projects. Details will be out with the next Wild Ones Journal. In the meantime you might start out in a very small way by helping with this milkweed study hosted by College of William and Mary. All it takes is collecting 5 milkweed leaf samples and, if possible, 5 milkweed bugs. Email milkweedgenetics at gmail.com <mailto:milkweedgenetics at gmail.com> to request a collection kit and more info. http://monarchlab.org/resources-links/blog/citizen-scientists-needed-to-study-the-changing-milkweed-population <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001UfD5Yneo9Vnru1JxmNUoZVmFCbFT9SQ3vl4C5FLEJ-etr0e1AvtolYtLQ-tdnR3WhrXGPqy0FyNMJr9oU1CEGvUkOfkO6AK_hmOFlg2w7vIJQMKWvPoCwnpNE3ZvVJ6E-Fz5x7ozxsANGS-80GlRsDxKx33YTqjMzoeC45Zhqp5yzt6v3cCJHBCGYRzZOw4O-3yzXKJZQXZKbZgjfI89iVmo-pzbaXTVKgzuHVM6xnEZzW4OLVOQhRb2JiEK1el5PSUlYKiuZNFGA6IQDf4rdLy1J4TUub-t9k-JJFG0Ozo=&c=ZUx5PvsFBZw-4pgA4-nLlVBux5e4v2m8BTylsG3k9cBCpxrrgrEDBw==&ch=ByLbREo5uPGsJTuhE45TZfR7OHH-SQoTEStqgx-UYA-Fs6AQ8piwJA==>

* Monarchs self-medicate with medicinal milkweed such as tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) - monarchs with ophryocystis elektroscirrha (Oe)seem to choose milkweed plants with higher levels of cardenolides on which to lay their eggs which allows their offspring to live longer. Unfortunately, this doesn't cure the offspring nor does it prevent the spread of Oe, and in some cases might foster more spread because it reduces spore load on a butterfly that would otherwise die or be unable to fly. This leads to that butterfly spreading the parasites to its offspring. So don't be fooled into thinking that non-native tropical milkweed is ok to grow in your habitat. https://www.ted.com/talks/jaap_de_roode_how_butterflies _self_medicate/transcript?language=en#t-188293 <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001UfD5Yneo9Vnru1JxmNUoZVmFCbFT9SQ3vl4C5FLEJ-etr0e1AvtolYtLQ-tdnR3WZ_0oIb-MVFEItgVnWVpeytMPFzHCFbX4VfwHqFjHoD3ZPHoQwl6A8laBb7Tyl7k1T6m2ISa2OkSK-rP0wIEpqNu0qj3YQNArKiNqqFte8-gbUuSSL-RUuFo6VcHurpqUiXpHQZQWV7dTwSKAqpHM7yN_7yJecWNqzwTbum4clcsPuyiUtjofkLCzDHGCdC4Hhb5Tm-uMAxxsmo71lcBynl57xm00NDRX&c=ZUx5PvsFBZw-4pgA4-nLlVBux5e4v2m8BTylsG3k9cBCpxrrgrEDBw==&ch=ByLbREo5uPGsJTuhE45TZfR7OHH-SQoTEStqgx-UYA-Fs6AQ8piwJA==>
