ROCK CREEK CONSERVANCY SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR EXTREME CLEANUPFamily-Friendly Volunteer Event


 
The seventh annual RockCreek Extreme Cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 11, from 9 amto 12 pm.  Rock Creek Conservancy is seeking volunteers to remove trashand debris at 70+locations along Rock Creek in Washington, DC, and Montgomery County, MD.  The three-hour cleanup will bring together kids,families, and adults of all ages to pick up litter from the creek andwoodlands. 


 
As part of the 125thAnniversary of Rock Creek Park, the Conservancy is seeking to engage andinspire everyone to find themselves in Rock Creek. "People love Rock Creekand are really eager to be involved," according to Conservancy ExecutiveDirector, Matthew Fleischer. “They can make a difference right here, and it’s afun way for kids and adults to be outside and give back to theircommunity.  Our parks are now visibly andmeasurably cleaner, but they still need a spring cleaning.”


 
People interested in volunteering can find a cleanuplocation and sign up at the Rock Creek Conservancy website, rockcreekconservancy.org.


 
During each of the past six years, volunteers have fannedout in parks bordering the 33-mile length of Rock Creek and collected over 14,600 bags of litter, 69 tons of junk, 867tires, and 37,350 plastic bags. Duringthe Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup,volunteers carrying colorful trash bags can be seen for miles in Rock Creekparks.


Rock Creek Conservancy is anonprofit organization working to protect the lands and waters of Rock Creekand revitalize Rock Creek Park.  The Conservancyfields volunteers for the events in partnership with Montgomery County Parksand the National Park Service.  The RockCreek Extreme Cleanup is part of the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s Potomac RiverWatershed Cleanup.  

 

The Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup is supported by generousgrants from Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) and the Chesapeake Bay Trust.
