[MAIPC] [GRAYMAIL] does Chlorox work on cut stems?

Agricultural vinegar is good on young thistle and tender plants.   Like other people said, there are alternative practices which have been developed to minimize or eliminate the use of herbicides in parks. If you go to http://www.slideshare.net/rtgardner3/berks-county-pa-invasive-species-volume-1 there are some ideas which may be usable for several common issues.  A lot of it depends on how much time people are willing to devote to the weeds.                                                                                                      Richard

Here is a paper on the topic of natural-based products for vegetation control published In Weed Tech (http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/westcentresext/4/) or see this study funded by Caltrans (http://www.dot.ca.gov/newtech/researchreports/2002-2006/2003/alternative_vegetation_control_final_report.pdf), which included cut-stump treatments with pine oil, acetic acid and others along with Roundup on Scotch broom. Steve

Subject: Re: [MAIPC] [GRAYMAIL] does Chlorox work on cut stems?      Folks, don’t get me wrong: I am not an advocate of Chlorox, but what if it were used to paint on cut stems? Chlorox is chlorine based and in concentrated form is certainly very damaging if it gets on skin, etc., but I am trying to get some points I can use either pro or con responding to people who are suggesting that Chlorox could be used in place of herbicides such as Roundup.   Ruth   From: Grund, Steve [mailto:SGrund at paconserve.org]

Subject: RE: [GRAYMAIL] [MAIPC] does Chlorox work on cut stems?   I’m sure it would, but I don’t think it is a good solution. Chlorine bleach is a pesticide, just not a registered one (as far as I know). It is doubtlessly much more harmful to the environment than Roundup.   Steve Grund Botanist Natural Heritage Program, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy 800 Waterfront Drive Pittsburgh, PA 15222 (412) 586-2350 www.paconserve.org   From: MAIPC [mailto:maipc-bounces at lists.maipc.org]On Behalf Of Ruth Douglas

Subject: [GRAYMAIL] [MAIPC] does Chlorox work on cut stems?   Hello, there is a group locally that wants to ban pesticides in parks except in emergencies. It has been suggested that Chlorox will do the work of Roundup in painting cut shrub etc. stems, maybe in other situations as well, not sure. Anyone have any comments on this?   Thanks in advance.   Ruth Douglas
