[MAIPC] Kudzu

Unless you're putting in a parking lot or high rise, something is always going to come back no matter what tool is used. The important thing which Duncan has identified and much research has shown is that natives or desirable plants can be established, but it requires knowledge of what is there, what you want to be there, and what will be required to get it there. Rarely are situations ever the same.

I find that almost all invasives can be killed by repeated use of a string trimmer-eventually the plants die and amazingly there are usually thousands of dormant native wildflower, shrub and tree seeds just waiting to come up. At least that's what happened at Wyman Park Dell in Baltimore. Almost all invasives are dead with heavy infestations on 6 acres of woodlands and tons of native plants came up. We just have minor maintenance each year from here on out. If anyone wants a tour, just holler.

We are a totally herbicidee-free park and have signs saying so. Glyphosate has been banned in a number of countries-not sure, but I think France, the Netheerlands, Brazil, Ontario...not judging on it's use, but there ya go.

Great list serv-

The carcinogenic properties of glyphosate went thru extensive reviews and appears to be relatively, low, especially at the low rates we apply it to control invasives. Does anyone have an updated review.

Yes,
Roundup has been found to be a carcinogen. I would hope anyone using it would take appropriate precautions.

PS - just Google "how to kill kudzu" - one way apparently is to keep removing the vegetative parts and eventually the core dies too...but you can probably spend a whole day just reading the hits that come up.

Greg,
Here is information on Roundup. http://www.cdpr.ca.gov/docs/emon/pubs/fatememo/glyphos.pdf

I think judicious use of Roundup would have minimal impact. I use it to control poison ivy, and some other hard to control vines. I still pull my English Ivy by hand.
