Thank you for the confirmation on the maple.

I just needed to hear it from someone else to start accepting it.

Patricia

Hi Patricia,

Those appear to be sugar maples, based on the 3-5 main veins, the lack of spine-like tips on the leaf apices, and your description of lack of milky sap.

For details on how to ID this species combination and several others, you can download the PDF of a publication that I coauthored here: http://delawareinvasives.net/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/Mistaken_Identity.5855244.pdf

Best,
Matt

Hi,
I would love confirmation on what species of maple I am seeing aggressively invading a natural area in Reston. It doesn’t appear to have the milky sap that Norway maples are supposed to when a stem is broken. If it is a sugar maple, has anyone else seen sugar maples take over a natural area, completely? I read that aggressive sugar maples are taking over the Missouri and Mississippi river banks so I’m wondering if that’s what’s going on here.

Thank you,
Patricia
