[MAIPC] spotted knapweed in the east

Knotweed has been in WV since at least 1918 (Morgan Co.) and in southern part of the state from 1920's.  It has spread N & W so that there are now records from 32 counties.


Last weekend I noted abundant roadside populations in WV eastern panhandle & Cumberland, MD areas.  Thanks to Whitney for her management efforts around the Potomac!

The PA Bureau of Forestry has found that spotted knapweed is invasive in our state. Luckily, it doesn’t compete as well in forested or mesic sites.  However, on more xeric sites (rocky roadsides, ROW’s, barrens, cliffs) it can certainly be more aggressive and take space and resources away from native plants that might use those habitats. Additionally, we’ve monitored it increasing on many of the Marcellus pads and ROW’s, and it has been a management concern on some areas we are maintaining as grassland for rare bird species.

It was invasive in prairie restorations in Ann Arbor, MI. The U of M landscape architect dept. could be contacted, or the city's Natural Areas Preservation director in the parks dept., for more up to date info.



I found something called Tyrol's knapweed (Centaurea nigrescens) spreading in a small area along the towpath in Princeton, NJ. And am seeing Daucus carota in some spots in NJ start to act as invasive in meadows as it was in Michigan.

All,
I am working on adding spotted knapweed to the list of invasive plants in the Mid-Atlantic that have biocontrol insects available for release, but the vast majority of published work deals with infestations in western rangelands. The implication seems to be that it rarely becomes invasive in the east, but maybe that is changing.
Does anyone know of (1) infestations of knapweed in particular habitats in the east or (2) any states in the eastern US that have released biocontrol insects targeting this species?

Judy,

I'm glad we are giving this plant more attention. It is definitely an invasive in natural areas in the eastern states. See the EDDMapS based map of its distribution nationwide from the Invasive Plant Atlas of the United States.  I saw large infestations of it along I-70 and I-68 this past weekend in Allegany and Washington Cos. in Maryland.
