All

See Charley's note regarding the thoughts on the critters feeding on the grass. Looks like it could be an interesting situation. I would highly recommend taking Charley up on his offer to look at specimens.

He is copied on this email.

Good luck.

Hi Sam-- Hard to say without seeing higher-resolution photos of both sides of the leaves. I'm not sure these are leaf mines--might be "window feeding" on the surface. As far as I know no North American leafminer has been recorded from Oplismenus, and the Dichanthelium feeding doesn't look like any of the various moth, fly, and beetle mines I know on that host. I'd be happy to take a look at samples if they want to send me some.

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone seen wavyleaf basketgrass getting attacked like this before? Beltsville photo album: https://goo.gl/photos/2FiwZpebPcdWFrHw6 - Notice how similar the damage is to what we are finding on our deer-tongue grasses (Last four photos).

At Little Paint Branch Park & Beltsville Neighborhood Park I estimate we are seeing this damage in at least 50% of all our wavyleaf patches. We have seen this damage for roughly 3 years but in previous years it was very isolated to just handful of plants, now it has spread across most of the park, affecting thousands of WLBG plants. Last year I came up with a theory that this damage is possibly caused by the same leaf-miner that seems so fond of our Deer-Tongue.

Although we haven’t seen any plants killed by this apparent leaf-miner, the plants do seem much more susceptible to stress once damaged, such as the dry conditions we’ve seen in Beltsville this year, possibly reducing or at least delaying seed production.

Perhaps a leaf-miner fly or leaf-miner moth already associated with Dichanthelium clandestinum?http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/grasses/tables/table130.html

Let us know your thoughts, if you have any advice for getting this insect identified, or if you’ve seen anything else attacking WLBG.

Also, is anyone collecting WLBG seeds this year for any studies? I can assure you we have plenty.

Thanks,

Just a thought. If you see insects or fungal infections on the native or non-native plants in the wild, this may be useful information.

I have two students who will be working on wavy leaf genetics and physiology this summer, and would greatly appreciate help from all of you to (1) send us fresh tissue, and/or (2) give us locations of known populations. I'm particularly hopeful we can find some native populations this spring for comparisons.

It's been speculated that the invasive and native lineages differ in their tolerance to shade, which may influence where they can colonize. If we can also find some NATIVE populations, my student and I will travel to those locations and take some photosynthetic measurements to test for differences in photosynthetic light response curves.

Thanks for your help, and please let me know if you have any questions!

Best,

Carrie

I'll also add my thanks to all who have already sent seeds, and who might be planning to do so in the near future.

As Vanessa said, I'll be using students in my upper-level Molecular Ecology class in the spring semester to do an initial population genetics survey for all samples that we receive.

If you haven't yet been affected by the impending freeze, and also have some fresh leaf tissue that is still green, please include that with the seeds, since it will allow me to run some pilot studies before we get the seeds growing here. Ideally, it's best to put the leaf tissue in a ziploc bag with some silica gel (like what's in the little packets in some vitamins, or with new shoes), but even in a plain ziploc bag is fine.

Native samples would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help! And please let me know if you have any questions.

The pdf for anyone who wants it. The website in the previous email was password protected - at least when I tried it.

Thanks to those of you who have already sent wavyleaf seed to Carrie Wu at the University of Richmond. We could still use some more samples for her population genetics project. The more we know about this species, the better chance we have at controlling it. If you are able to donate a few minutes of time and a few dollars of postage we're asking that you collect some wavyleaf seed from your local population and send it in to Carrie. Her molecular ecology class will grow the tissue they need from the seed. Simply take a pair of scissors, chop off a handful or two of inflorescences and stick them in a paper bag or envelope. Record a GPS point for your sample or include a map with an approximate location. Put the inflorescences and location information in a larger envelope and mail to the address below. If anyone has access to populations of the native Oplismenus hirtellus ssp. setarius, seed from these plants would also be a valuable addition to the project.

When collecting seed from the invasive wavyleaf be careful not to get any on you and become an inadvertent disperser. Collect from the edge of a population along a trail or opening so that you don't have to wade through the grass. Don't wear your normal hiking shoes. My students wear rain boots and the seed brushes off them very easily.

Who can contact NRCS and/or Torrey Botanical Club to find the county where the native Oplismenus was reported from in Virginia? NRCS reports native Oplismenus in Virginia: http://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=OPHIS. Underhttp://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=OPHIS I clicked on data source and documentation and found 2000. Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club. For the VA finding. The native insects and pathogens that prevent the native Oplismenus from being invasive could then be potential biological controls for the non-native Oplismenus in Virginia after research studies.

I was just looking at the Digital Atlas of Virginia Flora (which only shows O. hirtellus ssp undulatifolius, no ssp hirtellus) and then http://www.herbarium.unc.edu/seflora/firstviewer.htm for a digital atlas of the southeast. UNC herbarium does not list O. hirtellus ssp hirtellus at all; instead they list ssp setarius, showing it on NC outer banks & 2 counties in from there as closest to us, then after a gap, scattered places mostly along the coast, with the most solid representation in Louisiana. Interesting.

When I had a volunteer group from New Life Church remove isolated Chinese Privett, English Ivy, It's not holly barberry, garlic mustard, and wineberry from the 200 acre Swann Park in Charles County MD Saturday, we reminded them that the biggest threat is developers, followed by non-native invasive species and deer that eat the natural vegetation and spread Lyme Disease from deer ticks. In sections of the park where the deer are under control and the Japanese Stiltgrass removed they loved seeing the incredible diversity of dozens of species of native American plants including Calico Aster, Deer Tongue, and American Persimmon which they then proceeded to eat the ripe fruit.

Most groups have given up on Japanese Stiltgrass which has become so bad in part because of late emergents caused by climate change. Fortunately, USFS funded research for effective, host specific biological control of stiltgrass is ongoing . If we do the research, biological controls by insects or pathogens are almost never harmful to native species but if we do not do the research first they are horrible to native species about 50% of the time. We can support research into biological controls of Wavyleaf Basket grass which has destroyed thousands of acres of Patapsco Valley State Park and is spreading rapidly thru the Eastern U.S. Following are messages about the need to find someone to work on in North Carolina to save all of us from WLBG. Do you have a student, intern, or professor that might be interested in doing this research? Thanks

Hi Jill,

Thanks so much for your input in how we should describe and fund this project. You suggested perhaps $10,000- 50,000 to include a combination of field work by botanists, pathologists and entomologists. MNPS is interested in considering some matching funds, perhaps #1,000, as is Sierra Club.

Hi advocates for control of wavyleaf basketgrass,

Just a reminder. Please see the bottom paragraph below. It would be good fo facilitate research on native biological controls for wavyleaf basket grass by researching the native basketgrass, which is not invasive, in North Carolina. The difficulty is finding someone who is familiar with how bad wavyleaf basket grass is, but doing the research in a state where the invasive has not arrived yet. It has covered thousands of acres in Patapsco Valley in Maryland forming a complete mono-culture and is considered our most serious invasive threat. Do you know anyone who may be able to do thiscritical work. If so, thank you for passing thisrequest on.

Thanks for your work in removing Oplismenus hirtellus undulatifolius from Maryland and Virginia. I learned at the Fall conference of the Maryland Native Plant Society on Sept 20, 2014, held in Cecil County that a very large patch was found nearby in Maryland very near Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. It is estimated that unless we control it ASAP, 10-20% of the natural environment of one forth of the united States may be lost. Two methods can be employed:

1. Early Detection and Rapid Response. Many of us are actively removing and facilitating removal at it's source in Patapsco Valley as well as surveying for, and removing it elsewhere in Virginia and Maryland.

2. Research into effective, host specific, biological controls for Wavyleaf Basketgrass.

   a. Research at it's origin in Eurasia, similar to the ongoing research on Japanese Stiltgrass, Microstegium vimineum. If this stage of research in China reveals insects or pathogens that are evidently appropriate for Japanese Stiltgrass, the next stage of research will be to test them in quarantined conditions for host specificity on native American plants. The same procedures would be done for wavyleaf basketgrass, Oplismenus hirtellus undulatifolius.

   b. Research into potential native biological controls for Wavyleaf Basketgrass. For example, native biological controls have been found for Tree of Heaven and Multiflora Rose. Unlike Japanese Stiltgrass, which has no other species in the genus Microstegium native to America, there are native species of the genus Oplismenus in America. So a biological control of Asian origin is less likely to be host specific.

Thanks for your interest in research of the life cycle of the native Oplismenus in North Carolina, and elsewhere in America. The native insects and pathogens that prevent the native Oplismenus from being invasive could then be potential biological controls for the non-native Oplismenus in Virginia and Maryland. John Peter Thompson suggests that the research on what controls the native Oplismenus be done on the main patches as well as at the edges of the populations to see what keeps the native from spreading. Please share this request with potential researchers at universities, agencies and other sources. One chalenge is the NIMBY(not in my back yard) issue since some potential agencies and universities where the native basketgrass occurs are in different States than where we are currently experiencing the invasiveness of the non-native basketgrass and understand the importance of the research.
