[MAIPC] Durham Pelham road leaf miner may be on Microstegium ...

All,

I have been sampling for arthropods associated with communities of
non-native plants, including Japanese stiltgrass, in landscapes throughout
the Mid-Atlantic region. So far, I have not encountered any herbivores
feeding on the grass; any plant-feeding arthropod I did collect were
species that fed on trees in the canopy. However, I have found trace
amounts (so far, 2 leaves) of damage caused by leaf-mining flies (Family
Agromyzidae) from sites in Queen Anne's County, MD, so it is possible that
Japanese stiltgrass is being recognized as a plant host by some of our
native herbivores. I'll have more information as I sort through this year's
data.

That being said, the sheer amount of stiltgrass in these landscapes not
being infected by leaf-mining flies would suggest to me that this kind of
feeding may not be advantageous for the herbivores, so we may not want to
jump to conclusions just yet. The areas where I did sample for arthropods
associated with Japanese Stiltgrass were near native grass communities, and
it is possible that leaf-mining flies selected a poor quality host in
comparison to a warm-season perennial. There might also be timing issues
with sampling for the leaf miners (i.e., BugGuide records of leafminers on
living Microstegium tissues occurred in May, whereas the plant is more
aggressive later in the summer). But, let's keep an eye out for leaf damage
where we know the plants are dominant.
