[MAIPC] Unknown shrub Kolkwitzia perhaps

Tim Block did us a huge service and looked at the Morris Arboretum's collections of Philadelphus and Kolkwitzia to see if there were any leaf/stem traits that could distinguish between the two. Here’s what he came up with – and by this method it would seem that Mark’s specimens are more consistent with Philadelphus.

>From Tim:
Good morning, Norris:

The easiest way to tell Kolkwitzia from Philadelphus vegetatively is to look for the axillary buds. The buds of Philadelphus are buried in the base of the petiole, while those of Kolkwitzia are readily evident (see photos).

Other than that, I can't see much in the way of consistently applicable characters. But, this one appears completely consistent across all species of Philadelphus. Of course, there is only one species of Kolkwitzia.

I say it is closest to Kolkwitzia amabilis per Michael Dirr (although I have never seen it either). Looks like a Philadelphus in the first photo, but definitely not per the second photograph. It’s woody so I doubt it is a Persicaria.
