[MAIPC] Microstegium cutting

Microstegium will absolutely continue to ripen its seeds after cutting, but this of course depends on the physiological state of the developing seed. Although anecdotal – a fully-formed green seed seems to mature after cutting – but I do not know much more outside of this observation.

I don't know about the ability to ripen after cutting specifically for this species but it is certainly true in other species that viable seeds can be produced after cutting in the flowering stage. Evolutionary it seems likely it is true for many species.

Related question: If one delays until the seeds are beginning to emerge from the stem, might they mature despite being mowed at that point?

Agreed. You want to cut as close to flowering as possible. Now through mid September in DC.

I recommend to folks (down here in NC) that now is a good time to scalp Microstegium. What perennials are there will re-sprout and take the site. I would wait a bit if they are not taking it below typical mower deck height.

Hi all,
I know this info exists in several places – but I thought I’d exercise your collective brains.

I’m looking for a quick reminder on the optimal height at which to cut Microstegium. I know timing is also important – but the person who asked me is looking to do it ASAP (i.e. their cutting time is fixed to lat August). Mostly the concern is – could you easily leave it too tall?

Thanks!
