All,

I contacted Dr Luke Flory for his input. Please see his message below
.
. I was curious about the timing of cutting with respect to the hidden or
cleistogamous ("CL") flowers and seeds.

Thank you,

Jil

Hi Jil,

Mowing is tough because it often isn’t low enough to catch all/most of the
CL seeds, which can be produced low to the ground. More effective is string
trimming very close to the ground, but of course then you hammer the native
species. Even better is a grass-specific herbicide, which can exclude Mv
and allow most native species to return. If mowing is the only option,
mowing year after year after about Aug 15 or once flowering starts, can be
helpful in reducing seed production and spread. CL seeds ripen later than
CH seeds, usually in mid to late October in the PA latitude.

Attached here are a bunch of papers, but there are quite a few others. Let
me know if you are interested in anything in particular that isn’t included
here (complete list on my web site).

Luke

Hello Dr. Flory (Luke),

I wondered if you would be interested in weighing in on this question about
when to mow microstegium when it's mixed with native species. I was also
curious about the viability of the cleistogamous fruits. When do they
ripen, are they viable and should that be considered when doing management?

Do I need to contact you for each individual publication you have on this
plant or could I get access to all of your stiltgrass papers?

Thanks very much,

Jil

Hi all,

I know this info exists in several places – but I thought I’d exercise your
collective brains.

I’m looking for a quick reminder on the *optimal height* at which to cut
Microstegium. I know timing is also important – but the person who asked me
is looking to do it ASAP (i.e. their cutting time is fixed to lat August).
Mostly the concern is – could you easily leave it too tall?

Thanks!
