[MAIPC] MAIPC Digest, Vol 80, Issue 22

Hi all,

I'm a recent hire as a Stewardship Assistant at Wissahickon Valley
Watershed Association in Ambler PA- we manage a patchwork of suburban
preserves, the larger ones are ~80 acres, there are several smaller ones
~10-20 acres and long, narrow sections of riparian corridor. We currently
have a controlled archery hunting program for deer management but
historically have struggled with assessing impacts of our management
program since we're so influenced by deer movement/activity outside our
property boundaries. Does anyone have experience/suggestions with
monitoring on small parcels and/or advice for how to initiate a larger
community-wide task force? I know we have worked with some local
municipalities in the past but we span several different townships across
the watershed.

Also, I worked briefly in Hunter Education and Outreach and learned quite a
bit about recent national movements to introduce hunting to the younger,
environmentally conscious "locavore" crowd, particularly in suburban areas,
which is having some success in places like Athens, Madison, WI and others.
Does anyone know of any attempts to incorporate this sort of outreach with
controlled/managed hunting to train a next generation of deer managers? I'm
interested in pursuing this route as a way to facilitate a larger
conversation and bridge some of the typical conflicts of interest/perceived
boundaries between different groups of stakeholders. Not a fix-all but
possibly a valuable addition to sharpshooting, non-lethal management and
other techniques.

Thanks,
-Pat Oelschlager
