Mainly an invasive species article... but a lot can apply to the damage
mountain biking/off-road vehicles does to the natural environment. Mountain
biking took a real foothold 20+ years ago, and travel further into the back
country, etc. No wonder there is such a spread of non-native plants, etc.
Horses and hikers don't travel as far, but 1998 started seeing the rise of
mountain biking in our natural areas and parks...

Excerpt from the article...

"Infestations can and do spread to many different places and as a result of
multiple kinds of activities, including motorized travel, horse riding,
mountain biking, hiking, and even in the fur of dogs.

Despite aggressive treatment, invasive infestations across National Forest
System lands in Central Oregon have increased by more than 500 percent over
the last 20 years, from 2,200 acres during a 1998 mapping to 14,500 acres
during a 2012 mapping.

Invasive plants (add: Mountain bikers/ORV's) increase fire hazards, degrade
fish and wildlife habitat, displace native plants, impair water quality, and
even degrade scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. They also reduce
forage opportunities for livestock and wildlife."
(Everyone ignores the damage mountain bikes and other off road vehicles do
to the natural environment....)

I am working on creating wildlife habitat that is off-limits to humans
("pure habitat"). Want to help?
(I spent the previous 8 years fighting auto dependence and road
construction.)

Wildlife must be given top priority, because they can't protect themselves
from us.

Please don't put a cell phone next to any part of your body that you are
fond of!
