[MAIPC] Dinotefuran?

Good point Kirsten. We need to see if farmers are applying neonicotinoids in accordance with the compromise that was agreed to by the environmental community. At a MISC meeting a pro-environmental invasive species expert pointed out an appropriate species example.

I see that this ban does not apply to farmers.

A state ban on consumer use of neonicotinoid pesticides is slated to take effect Jan. 1, 2018, after Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) announced that he will allow S.B. 198/H.B. 211 to become law without his signature.

The legislation, which includes exceptions for certified applicators, farmers and veterinarians, makes Maryland the first state to adopt such a ban on consumer use, according to a coalition of environmental organizations operating as Smart on Pesticides Maryland.

The measure was prompted by concerns that neonicotinoid pesticides contribute to mortality of pollinators such as bees, birds and butterflies.

Marc, I am curious to know what you mean when you say MD “legislatively greatly reduced the use of neonics to the few cases where it made sense.” Does that mean that the MD legislature actually passed a bill restricting the use of neonics? If so, please supply a link to that. I’m in Virginia, by the way. And any hints for how you all successfully did that would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks Tom. Yes let us only used if necessary. In MD we legislatively greatly reduced the use of neonicotinoids to the few cases where it made sense.

Thoughts about Dinotefuran? Apparently it may be the pesticide used against the spotted lanternfly. It is a <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neonicotinoid> neonicotinoid.
