[MAIPC] sassafras trees?

  I have been seeing an unusual number of sassafras trees downed across the Appalachian Trail and side trails in Berks County, PA. A friend of mine has seen the same on land he owns. Is something happening to these trees such as a disease? I have not looked close, but the trees I have sawed through show no evidence of borers or similar.
