"Reverse fertilization", the addition of a carbon source like sawdust or sugar, has shown some promise in grasslands.  It's probably not going to be practical in anything but the smallest cases, though.  A good reference is:

Blumenthal, D.M., N.R. Jordan and M.P. Ruselle. 2003. Soil carbon addition controls weeds and facilitates prairie restoration. Ecological Applications 13(3): 605-615.

Here are two facts to consider.



1. Eutrophic (fertilized) environments promote invasives.

2. Oligotrophic (low nutrient) environments are favored by many native plants, especially our rarest species.
