I wonder more if the dense bush honeysuckle and knotweed infestation crept into the wet woodlands from the edges, slowly changing the wet soil hydrology drier to it's liking...sucking the soil dry. Removal of the honeysuckle/knotweed could return the soil to it's previous natural wet hydrology; the area ALSO could have been less shady (preferred for Knotweed) 10 years ago, whereby removal would also create an environment more "moist/wet, shady woodlands" for Spicebush than the knotweed. The Spicebush doesn't stop the knotweed per se, the site conditions changed over time to possibly favor the Spicebush.

Hi All - I got this from a gardener friend who has been restoring her property. Her question is whether spicebush stops knotweed.
Marney
My property includes a large moist/wet woodland.
Until now I was giving away the spice bush (Lindera benzoin) that is taking over especially in the damp to wet place that I have been rescuing and planting like crazy. I believe the flourishing began after all the bush honeysuckle was removed and (after 10 years) eliminating the knotweed.
I noticed that where there are densely growing spice bushes there is no Japanese knotweed. That appears true no matter the size of the spice bush.
Just outside one bed of spice bush the knotweed is thriving. Am I dreaming? Is it the shading, root crowding or another thing?
There is a terrible infestation of the knotweed on the property line shared by my neighbor and the adjacent Park property.
In a fever of enthusiasm my helper and I moved 30 plus spice bushes to the neighbor's property line and especially nearest the storm water channel. We intend to gather up many more to plant 3 deep along the other borders of infestation.
